Systema Front Roll

Updated: Oct 9

A Systema front roll is a forward roll used in Russian martial art. It is designed for practical and efficient movement, particularly when you might fall or need to evade an attack. Here's how to explain it step by step:

Start Position

Begin standing in a relaxed stance, with your feet shoulder-width apart. Keep your knees slightly bent, and remain calm and loose.

Lean Forward

As you prepare to roll, shift your weight slightly forward, bending your knees deeper to lower your center of gravity. This allows for a smoother roll.

Reach One Arm Forward

Extend one arm (typically your right if you're rolling over your right shoulder) in front of you. This arm will guide your movement. Your head should be slightly tucked to avoid any impact on the neck.

Roll Over the Shoulder

As you move forward, drop onto the arm and allow the momentum to carry you over the shoulder (right shoulder if your right arm is extended). Unlike in some other martial arts, where you roll straight over your head, in Systema, the roll should be more diagonal, going from one shoulder across to the opposite hip. This keeps your head safe and prevents injury.

Tuck the Opposite Arm

While rolling, your opposite arm (left, if rolling over your right shoulder) should tuck close to your body to maintain balance and avoid flailing.

Use the Back of the Body

As your body moves forward, allow the roll to happen on the softer parts of your body, such as the shoulder, back, and hips. You’re aiming for a smooth, controlled roll with minimal impact.

Complete the Roll

As you finish the roll, reach a standing or squatting position, ready to continue moving or engage with your opponent. Ideally, face the direction you want to move, maintaining fluidity.

Key Points:

  • Relaxation is crucial. The more relaxed you are, the smoother the roll will be.

  • The roll should be natural and fluid, without stiffness or tension.

  • Practice rolling on both sides, ensuring symmetry and adaptability in dynamic situations.

By keeping these principles in mind, the Systema front roll becomes an effective and efficient way to move without exposing yourself to harm or losing control of your body.
